Fever Care in Orlando Serving Oviedo & Alafaya, FL
What a Fever Really Means
A fever isn’t a sickness itself. It’s your child’s body’s natural defense against infection. When their temperature goes up, it’s often a sign that their immune system is working as it should — fighting off viruses or bacteria that don’t belong. Most fevers are mild, short-lived, and part of the body’s normal healing process.
When to Call the Doctor
While many fevers can be managed safely at home, some situations need professional guidance. Contact Doctor Q Pediatrics if:
- Your baby under 3 months old has a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
- The fever lasts longer than 3 days
- Your child seems unusually irritable, drowsy, or weak
- There are additional symptoms such as a rash, stiff neck, breathing difficulty, or repeated vomiting
Dr. Quiñonez and her team are always happy to answer questions and help you decide the best next step for your child’s care.
Safe Fever Management at Home
For most children, rest, hydration, and comfort are all they need. Keep them cool with light clothing, encourage water or electrolyte drinks, and allow plenty of time for rest. If your pediatrician recommends it, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen can be used to help lower discomfort or temperature — always according to your child’s age and weight.
Important Note on Acetaminophen and Autism
There has been some misinformation circulating online suggesting a link between Tylenol (acetaminophen) and autism. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), there is no credible scientific evidence supporting this claim. Acetaminophen remains one of the safest and most effective fever-reducing medications for children when used correctly. Parents can feel confident using it as directed by their child’s doctor.
